Mogao Cave 17 (rock-cut temple; N/A; begun 9th century)

Note: One-room cave-temple, located off the corridor of Cave 16; originally designed in the 9th century to memorialize the monk Hongbian, who died in the year 862; depicted in a prominent statue. The son of a prominent family, Hongbian was the area's highest-ranking monastic official. His life-size statue, which originally contained his ashes, sits in meditation. A wall painting behind the statue provides the setting, while his deeds are discussed in a memorial stele. Was filled with manuscripts when discovered; most of the items were taken by non-Chinese and are now scattered throughout various museums and private collections in Britain, France, the United States, Germany, Russia, Japan, and other countries.
