Guiding (or Yinlu) Bodhisattva (painting (visual work); unknown Tang dynasty; ca. 851/900; British Museum (London, Greater London, England, United King...; 1919,0101,0.47 (Ch.lvii.002))
Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Hanging scroll of the transitional state between death and rebirth, in which a bodhisattva (Avalokiteśvara or Kṣitigarbha) guides a reverent laywoman on a raft of wispy red clouds toward a heavenly palace manifesting in the sky above, the Pure Land, indicated by the Chinese buildings at the top left. He holds a golden censer in his right hand, a white banner in his left. It reflects the widespread Mahayana belief that one could attain rebirth in a Pure Land (Chinese jingtu) by means of a variety of complex practices, most notably, contemplating the qualities and invoking the name of the buddha Amitābha.
