Note: Religious complex situated 25 kilometers southeast of the ancient Silk Road oasis town of Dunhuang in the far northwest of China, along the Daquan River. Comprises 492 cells, sanctuaries, and temples, profusely decorated. Adapted natural caves and rock-cut; famous for statues and wall paintings, spanning 1,000 years of Buddhist art. The earliest extant grotto dates to around 420; the last was made during the Mongol Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). Over a period of a millennium, possibly as many as one thousand caves and niches were excavated in the cliff face, and nearly five hundred decorated with elaborate painted muralsand sculpture modeled in clay; they were sponsored by monks, merchants, and others.
