Bodhisattva with Glass Bowl (banner; unknown Tang dynasty; ca. 9th century; British Museum (London, Greater London, England, United King...; 1919,0101,0.120 (Ch.0025))
Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. An extremely well preserved banner complete with triangular headpiece, streamers and weighting board. On the painted area is a bodhisattva, standing on a lotus, holding a glass beaker with a lotus blossom. With his face in rear three-quarter view, the bodhisattva inthis example assumes a dramatically swiveling posture to gazedown toward the bowl. Glass, a material exalted in medieval China for both its aesthetic qualities and rarity, was an important Silk Road commodity. Simultaneously a symbol of the triumph of the faith and a devotional adornment, the banner is a crucial component of Buddhist material culture. Countless Buddhist texts promote the hanging of banners, along with constructing stupas, sponsoring buddha images, almsgiving, and other acts that will accumulate merit (Chinese gongde; Sanskrit pun. ya) and lead to future happiness or auspicious rebirth.
