Note: Large, dense sutra transformation (jingbian) in a complex painting showing the Paradise of Maitreya, Buddha of the Future, in an architectural setting. Seated at the centre, Maitreya is accompanied by two bodhisattvas and two disciple monks. At their sides, two lokapalas (world protectors): Virūpākṣa with a sword and Vaisravana with a banner. Two other Buddhas, and dancers, deities and musicians are also part of the paradise scene. Above and below the main images are a series of smaller pictures showing scenes from the Sutra of Maitreya's Birth (Mile xiasheng jing), flanked by inscribed cartouches. | |
