Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Incomplete manuscript scroll with paintings on sheets of paper, illustrated with ink and light color; 12 characters per column. T 262, vol. 9. Traducteur: Kumarajiva (344-413). Following the 4th-century Kuchean monk Kumārajīva’s translation, this hand scroll exhaustively illustrates a key chapter in the widely read Lotus Sutra that circulated independently under the title “Guanyin Sutra.” It details how the bodhisattva, when invoked sincerely, will instantaneously reverse all manner of worldly peril and affliction, such as fire, shipwreck, infertility, and greed. As in the illustrated booklets on this theme from Dunhuang, this handscroll divides text and picture into lower and upper registers, a format that would become standard in Chinese printed books.
