Sutra on Requiting Kindness (Baoen jing) (painting (visual work); unknown Tang; ca. 800/850; British Museum (London, Greater London, England, United King...)
Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. By the Tang dynasty, buddha assemblies in Dunhuang painting were often set in elaborate palaces in sweeping landscapes, evoking the emanated paradises into which Mahayanists aspired to be reborn. The scene unfolding around the central preaching Buddha, Śākyamuni, is one of multisensory wonder and beauty. Emanated buddhas float on clouds above the palace; human-headed birds perch on landforms surfacing from pure, lotus-filled water below.
