Jewish Prayer (manuscript (documents); unknown Jewish; ca. 7th/9th century; Bibliotheque Nationale (Paris, Île-de-France, France); Pelliot hébreu I 1412; )
Note: From the Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. This eighteen-line fragment, missing both the beginning and the ending, is an exceedingly rare Jewish document among the tens of thousands preserved in the Library Cave.1 Prayers primarily drawn from the Book of Psalms are written in Hebrew with vocalization marks (superscript notations for vowels) of the so-called Babylonian school.2 The fragment takes the poetic form of the acrostic, with each stanza beginning with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The paper used for this manuscript is similar to that in use in ninthand tenth-century Dunhuang.4 Its horizontal creases may indicate that it was folded and worn by its owner as an amulet or talisman.
