Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Scene depicts the wealthy layman Vimalakīrti, reclining in his canopied bed, speaking before attendees at his forum with the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī. The figure of the worldly sage resonated deeply in China, and Vimalakīrti was depicted or emulated by some of the most prominent figures in Chinese painting history, from (reportedly) the 4th-century painter Gu Kaizhi (ca. 344-ca. 406) to the Qing dynasty Qianlong emperor. | |
