Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra (manuscript (documents); unknown scribe; ca. 9th/10th century; British Library (London, Greater London, England, United Kin...; Or.8210/S.5603)
Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. This manuscript demonstrates the interconnectedness of Chinese and Tibetan manuscript culture at Dunhuang during the ninth and tenth centuries, here in terms of format as well as language. The concertina, or accordion-folded book, seems to have developed as a synthesis of two older book formats, the scroll and the pothi, the latter of which originates in the palm-leaf manuscripts of ancient India. Dividing the text into pages, the concertina format facilitates nonsequential reading while maintaining the physical unity of the scroll. The holes piercing each page held the traditional string binding of the pothi (though they don,t seem to have been used) and, like it, the manuscript may originally have been protected by a wooden board at either end.
