Great Parinirvānạ Sutra (scroll (information artifact); unknown Chinese; ca. 9th/10th centuries)

Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. By the end of the Dunhuang period and in later Chinese tradition it became common to use silver or gold ink on dark blue paper (probably dyed with indigo) for the finest manuscripts. The Blue Qur’an, a manuscript copy of the Qur’an similarly written on gold ink on blue-dyed parchment probably dates from the ninth century. Scholars have not yet suggested a link, but the emergence of this form in two religious traditions linked by the Silk Road deserves to be investigated further.
