Diamond Sutra on Dyed Paper (scroll (information artifact); unknown Chinese; ca. 600/900)
Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Along with sizing and waxing, staining or dyeing was a common step in the medieval Chinese papermaking process, serving insecticidal and water-repellent, as well as decorative, purposes. According to experimental analysis, most paper at Dunhuang seems to have been dyed a yellow color derived from the Amur cork tree (Phellodendron amurense), known in Chinese as huangbo. This example is relatively rare among Library Cave materials in the overtly decorative use of multicolor dyes and ink, a practice that continued, in various forms, throughout the history of imperial China.
