Magic Competition between Śạriputra and Raudrākṣa (scroll (information artifact); unknown Chinese; ca. 9th/10th century; Bibliotheque Nationale (Paris, Île-de-France, France); Pelliot chinois 4524;)
Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Example of Chinese popular semivernacular literary genre known asthe bianwen, or transformation text. The origins and function ofthe bianwen, which is characterized by alternations of prose andverse on both secular and religious content, have been extensivelydebated. The preserved portion of the scroll depicts five rounds of the battle, showing, from right to left, Raudrāksa’s conjured mountainbeing smashed by Śāriputra’s vajra-wielding hulk, his water buffalo being killed by a lion, his pool being sucked dry by an elephant, his dragon being assaulted by a bird, and his demons being subdued by the Heavenly King Vaiśravana. The missing portion likely depicted the defeat of Raudrāksa’s tree by Śāriputra’s gale-force wind, which appears consistently in Dunhuang texts and wall paintings. Thus the Buddhists sweep the tournament, leaving the heretics no choice but to convert.
