Hollis Clayson, professor of art history at Northwestern University, explores the impact of new lighting technologies on the conceptualization of the modern interior on the part of the most inventive print-makers of the late 19th-century. The monochrome palette used in the prints to fashion shadowy interiors punctuated by points and zones of light is analyzed in terms of both the descriptive and metaphorical roles played by the orchestration of lights and darks in the prints.
