One of Brazil’s most acclaimed contemporary musicians, Hamilton de Holanda is known for his tour-de-force compositions and stunning command of the bandolim, or mandolin. Starting his professional career at the tender age of five, he went on to reinvent the sound, style, and technique of this beloved instrument by adding two extra strings (low Cs). “Virtuosic,” “brilliant,” and the “Jimi Hendrix of the mandolin,” are some of ways he's been described. None other than Wynton Marsalis calls him “the personification of everything we want in a musician.” Holanda returns to the Getty for the first time in nearly 20 years, presented in collaboration with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
