Mary Schmidt Campbell discusses An American Odyssey: The Life and Work of Romare Bearden, her biography of the renowned 20th-century African American artist. Bearden is known for work that explores universal themes through the celebration of African American culture.

A book signing follows her talk. An American Odyssey: The Life and Work of Romare Bearden will be available for purchase at The Getty Store before and after the lecture.

Mary Schmidt Campbell is Spelman College President and dean emerita of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts; she served as the vice chair of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities under former President Barack Obama.

This program, organized in collaboration with Spelman College and the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, is part of the Getty Research Institute's African American Art History Initiative, an ambitious program that aims to establish the GRI as a major center for the study of African American art history; Spelman College is an inaugural partner.
