Join us for a screening of rare material by Maren Hassinger on the occasion of her archive being acquired by the Getty Research Institute. Part of Getty's African American Art History Initiative, the event will explore the artist’s ceaseless experimentation in video art, performance, and sculpture. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Hassinger and GRI curator LeRonn Brooks, moderated by senior research specialist Kristin Juarez.

LeRonn Brooks is curator of the African American Art History Initiative at the Getty Research Institute.

Maren Hassinger is a New York-based artist who utilizes film, sculpture, and performance to build an expansive practice that articulates the relationship between nature and humanity. Her work explores the subjects of movement, family, love, nature, environment, consumerism, identity, and race. Her work has been featured at the Art Institute of Chicago, Dia Beacon, Dia Bridgehampton, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, LACMA, MoMA, SFMoMA, the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney, among others.

Kristin Juarez is senior research specialist for the African American Art History Initiative at the Getty Research Institute.

The Dancers on Film series features scholars, visual artists, and choreographers, screening classic and contemporary films together as a way to explore the dynamic influences of Black dance forms on the moving image. Part of the African American Art History Initiative.
