The exhibition On Thin Ice: Dutch Depictions of Extreme Weather tells a story of persistent global cooling in the 17th-century and shows how artists underscored the fundamental uncertainty of life and the necessity for adaptation in their depictions of ice skating and fishing. This panel discussion invites experts to deep dive into the meaning of landscape depictions. Rather than seeing these landscapes as merely descriptive, the speakers engage with allegorical interpretations to address political, social, and technological concerns. Following individual presentations, a roundtable discussion moderated by Getty curator Stephanie Schrader explores the varied and nuanced analyses of Dutch landscapes, specifically those by artist Hendrick Avercamp.
