The iconic 1999 remake of The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser famously reinterprets mummification and the Egyptian Book of the Dead. After a screening at Vidiots' historic Eagle Theatre, Egyptologist Stuart Tyson Smith discusses his experiences behind the scenes as the movie’s consultant. Introduction by Getty Antiquities curator Sara E. Cole. This program complements the exhibition The Egyptian Book of the Dead on view at the Getty Villa Museum through January 29, 2024. Stuart Tyson Smith is professor of Anthropology at UC Santa Barbara, whose research centers on the civilizations of ancient Egypt and Nubia. He has served an Egyptological consultant on several film productions.
