In a special collaboration with Monday Evening Concerts, the Getty Museum is thrilled to present Steve Reich's 1971 composition Drumming. A masterpiece of late-20th-century minimalist music, Drumming is a study in percussion with layers of repeated patterns played on bongos, marimbas, and glockenspiels, with piccolo and voice. Experience the cascading passages of Reich's iconic work as Jonathan Hepfer directs a unique presentation, set among the architecture and vistas of the Getty's plaza at sunset. Limited chairs and cushions will be available along with floor seating.
Founded in 1939, Los Angeles' Monday Evening Concerts (MEC) is one of the longest running series in the world devoted to contemporary music. Originally held in a rooftop loft in a Rudolph Schindler-designed studio in Silver Lake, the series, now operating out of downtown's Zipper Hall, is celebrating its 80th season with special engagements around Los Angeles. With a storied history that includes the American debut of Pierre Boulez, world premieres of Igor Stravinsky, and appearances by artists such as Marino Formenti, and the Arditti Quartet, MEC has gained international admiration for its presentation of music frequently new, sometimes old, and always uniquely stimulating. Jonathan Hepfer has been MEC's artistic director since 2015.
