Weather

The Los Angeles area has a desert climate - hot during the day, cold at night. Since the Getty Center is located close to the Pacific coast, it is not unusual to experience fog in the morning and very hot sunshine during the day and for the temperature to drop by 20 degrees Fahrenheit once the sun sets.

August and September are the hottest months, while January and February the coolest and wettest. Offshore breezes keep the beach communities cooler in summer and warmer in winter than areas further inland, such as the San Fernando Valley, which gets the hottest weather in the LA area in summer, and the coldest weather in winter.

Average Temperatures and Rainfall
The average LA temperature is around 70°F (21°C). The temperature on smog-shrouded summer days can get well over 90°F (32°C), while winter temperatures around 55°F (12°C) are not uncommon. Rain is rare in Los Angeles - the city gets about 34 days and 14 inches of rain a year, on average - but it can cause flooding when it sneaks up on the unsuspecting city.

Packing Suggestions

  • Light clothing worn in layers is sufficient most of the year.
  • Consider packing a light jacket or sweater.
  • Offices at the Getty are air conditioned year round, and kept quite cool. Consider packing a light sweater or jacket to slip on while indoors.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen are essential to fend off the glare from the travertine surfaces of the Getty Center.
  • "June gloom" refers to the ocean fog that keeps the beach cities (and often all of L.A.) overcast into the early afternoon. This morning ocean fog is most common in June, but can occur any time between March and mid-August.
  • The middle of autumn (October and November) often brings the "Santa Ana Winds," or "Santa Anas." These are strong, hot winds that blow into Los Angeles from the northern deserts.
