The Early Life of Taddeo
Allegories of Fortitude and Patience

Allegorical figures sit on either side of an empty circular reserve, which Federico probably intended to contain the Zuccaro family emblem (as in other drawings in this series). Fortitude sits at left, symbolizing courage, strength, and endurance. A lion signifying bravery crouches at her feet, while an ox peers over her shoulder. At right, Patience carries the yoke of servitude or obedience and sits with a lamb at her feet, while an ass stands behind her.
