Categories for the Description of Works of Art


The CDWA and Other Metadata Standards


The CDWA maps to and/or is the basis of several other metadata standards for describing works of art and material culture. Some of them are listed below. Please see the Metadata Standards Crosswalk for a mapping between metadata sets.


Cataloging Cultural Objects (CCO) is a fuller, more prescriptive set of cataloging rules for a critical subset of the CDWA subcategories.

CDWA Lite is an XML schema to describe core records for works of art and material culture based on the CDWA and the CCO.

VRA Core Categories 4.0 from the Visual Resources Association outlines an XML schema that is based on the CDWA and CCO.

FDA/ADAG Guide to the Description of Architectural Drawings includes additional data categories and rules regarding architectural drawings.

Object ID is a small subset of the CDWA categories, developed to help identify objects for the purpose of protecting them as cultural property, forms the metadata standard known as .

CDWA also maps to the MARC (Machine-readable Cataloging) format.
