Note: Shinto deity of the sun, often depicted as a woman. Associated with mirrors due to a legend in which Amaterasu hid in a cave and upon seeing her reflection in a mirror outside, was encouraged by other deities to come back out. This mirror, along with magatama jewels and her younger brother Susano-o no Mikoto's sword, comprise the major symbols of Japanese imperial regalia. In Shinto belief, deity of the sun and universe.
