![]() | Mark, Saint (Christian character)
Note: In Christian tradition, Mark the Evangelist is the author of the second gospel; his symbol is a lion, a reference to his courage when thrown to the lions; the animals refused to attack him, and the Romans released him. Traditionally held to be the same person referred to in Acts as John Mark (12:12, 25; 15:37), John (xiii, 5, 13), and Mark (15:39), is identical with the Mark mentioned by St. Paul (Colossians 4:10; 2 Timothy 4:11; Philemon 24) and by St. Peter (1 Peter 5:13).
