Uga Benzaiten (Japanese deity)

Note: Syncretic deity comprising iconographical features and roles of both Ugajin, a Shinto snake deity, and Benzaiten, a Japanese Buddhist deity modeled off of Sarasvati, a Hindu goddess. Often depicted with eight arms, with snakes and or dragons incorporated into her dress or illustrated around her body. Deity of good fortune, wealth, and abundance, deriving from both Ugajin's and Benzaiten's associations with wealth and fertility. This aspect is often illustrated by the inclusion of fifteen attendants, or dōji, assembled around Uga Benzaiten carrying pots, rice, wine, and other material goods. Particularly important in the Shugendō Buddhist tradition.
