Veronica, Saint (Christian character)

Note: legendary woman who, moved by the sight of Christ carrying his cross to Golgotha, gave him her kerchief to wipe his brow, after which he handed it back imprinted with the image of his face. In several regions of Christendom a saint called Veronica is honored as a pious matron of Jerusalem. The name is actually derived from "vera icon," meaning a true image; most likely the stories of Veronica developed in early Christian Rome around a pre-existing relic image that was known as the true image.
