Avalokiteshvara (Buddhist bodhisattva)

Note: Bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. This bodhisattva is variably depicted and described and is portrayed in different cultures as either female or male. He supremely exemplifies the bodhisattva's resolve to postpone his own Buddhahood until he has helped every being on earth achieve emancipation. Known in over 100 manifestations. Name occurs in Sanskrit by 7th century.
