Note: Refers to one of the three major phases of the Gansu culture, dating from ca. 3300 to ca. 2100 BCE. Majiayao culture covered western Gansu and eastern Qinghai provinces; it is named after a site in Lintao county in Gansu that was excavated in 1921 to 1923 by the Swedish archaeologist Johan Gunnar Andersson. Typical Majiayao-phase pottery includes jars and bowls of fine paste with lustrous black decoration painted on yellow or red grounds. Sweeping, curvilinear designs punctuated with a central dot or interspersed with undulating lines or crosshatching are characteristic, and are particularly found on jars and urns. Other designs include thick zigzags lines and frog, bird, and dancing human figures. Bone ornaments, stone and bone tools, and toys such as pottery rattles have been found. The limited bronzeworking of this period was of no significance to the economy.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 甘肅文化三個主要時期之一，介於西元前約3300年至西元前約2100年之間。馬家窯文化分布於甘肅省西方及青海省東方，瑞典考古學家約翰．貢納爾．安德森 (Johan Gunnar Andersson) 於1921年至1923年在甘肅省臨洮縣馬家窯發掘該遺址，故名。典型的馬家窯陶器包括細陶土製成的罐與碗，底色為黃色或紅色，上有亮黑色的裝飾。其裝飾圖形的特色為彎曲漩渦線條，中心點綴圓點，另外也有波浪形線條或平形交叉的線條設計，在罐或甕上尤其常見。其他裝飾還包括「之字形」粗線條、青蛙、鳥類、舞蹈人物等設計。已出現骨飾、石器、骨器，以及玩具如陶製波浪鼓等。此時期的青銅製作品規模有限，對當時經濟方面無甚影響。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een van de drie hoofdfasen van de Gansu-cultuur, die dateert uit circa 3300 tot circa 2100 v. Chr. De Majiayao-cultuur omvatte het westen van de provincie Gansu en het oosten van de provincie Qinghai; de naam is ontleend aan een vindplaats in het gewest Lintao in Gansu die van 1921 tot 1923 is uitgegraven door de Zweedse archeoloog Johan Gunnar Andersson. Typerend voor aardewerk uit de Majiayao-fase zijn potten en kommen van fijne kleibrij met zwart decor geschilderd in zijdeglans op een gele of rode ondergrond. Kenmerkend voor dit aardewerk zijn de brede, kromlijnige vormen met telkens een centraal geplaatste stip of afgewisseld met golvende lijnen of kruisarceringen. Deze vormen worden met name aangetroffen op potten en urnen. Ook werden vormen toegepast als dikke zigzaglijnen en motieven zoals kikkers, vogels en dansende menselijke figuren. Daarnaast zijn er ornamenten van been, stenen en benen gereedschappen, en speelgoed zoals aardewerken rammelaars opgegraven. Het schaarse bronswerk uit deze periode was niet van economisch belang. |
| Spanish ..... Refiérase a una de las tres fases principales de la cultura de Gansu, fechando a partir de ca. 2000 a ca. 1800 a.C. Se nombra después de un sitio al este de Ledu en la provincia del este de Qinghai que fue excavada en 1921 a 1923 por el arqueólogo sueco J Gunnar Andersson. La cerámica típica de la Majiayao incluye los tarros y los tazones con la decoración negra brillante pintada en amarillos o rojos. Los diseños curvilíneos puntuados con un punto central o entremezclados con las líneas onduladas o marcas con rayitas cruzadas son característicos, y se encuentran particularmente en los tarros y las urnas. Otros diseños incluyen líneas gruesas, pájaro, y figuras humanas que bailan. |
