Note: Irregularly occuring phenomenon in which a southward current of warm equatorial water displaces the northward Peru or Humboldt Current. It is characterized by unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and its disruption of the ocean-atmosphere system in the Tropical Pacific has important consequences for weather and climate worldwide.

| Dutch ..... Onregelmatig voorkomend fenomeen waarin een zuidwaartse warmwaterstroming vanaf de evenaar de noordwaartse Peru- of Humboldtstroom verdringt. Het fenomeen wordt gekenmerkt door ongebruikelijk hoge temperaturen van het zeeoppervlak in de equatoriale Stille Oceaan, terwijl de verstoring van het oceaan-atmosfeersysteem in de tropische Stille Oceaan verregaande gevolgen heeft voor het wereldwijde weer en klimaat. |
