Note: Indo-Aryan languages and dialects of the Punjab, also spoken in Punjabi communities elsewhere. It is closely related to Hindi and Urdu (differences in the sound-system, grammar and vocabulary). Panjabi has been particularly cultivated by the Sikhs; it is their religious language, always written with the Gurmukhi script. |

Dutch ..... Indo-Arische taal van de Punjab, die ook in Punjabi-gemeenschappen elders in de wereld wordt gesproken. De taal is nauw verwant aan het Hindi en Urdu, maar verschilt in zijn geluidensysteem, grammatica en vocabulaire. Het Punjabi is van bijzonder belang voor de sikhs, daar het hun religieuze taal is, altijd geschreven in het Gurmukhi-alfabet. |
