Note: Refers to impregnation of matter with salt. In the ecological context, refers to a land degradation process caused by excessive soil salinity in arid regions. The accumulation of salts in soil layers close to the surface produced by various causes (e.g., capillary transport of salts in the water table; fertilizers or excessive irrigation precipitating salts in the soil) can inhibit crop growth and may result in eventual desertification. |

Dutch ..... Het met zout impregneren van een materie. In een ecologische context verwijst de term naar een proces van bodemdegradatie die veroorzaakt wordt door de overmatige zoutinhoud van de bodem in droge gebieden. De ophoping van zout in ondiepe bodemlagen heeft verschillende oorzaken (zoals het capillair transport van zouten in het grondwater, of het gebruik van kunstmest of overmatige irrigatie), en kan de groei van gewassen verhinderen en uiteindelijk zelfs in verwoestijning resulteren. |
