Note: Species of medium-sized, polymorphic, evergreen Caribbean tree native mostly to sandy beaches of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, growing to 12 meters (40 feet) in height. All parts of the tree are poisonous. It has a highly caustic latex sap and an attractive, sweet-scented apple-like fruit that has regularly poisoned Spanish conquistadores, shipwrecked sailors, and present-day tourists. The manchineel is so poisonous that smoke from its burning wood irritates the eyes, and latex from its leaves and bark causes skin inflammation. Carib Indians used the sap to poison their arrows.

| Dutch ..... Middelgrote veelvormige groenblijvende Caraïbische boom die voornamelijk voorkomt op de zandstranden in het Caraïbische gebied en langs de Golf van Mexico. De boom kan 12 meter hoog worden. Alle delen van de boom zijn giftig. Het latex is zeer bijtend en de aantrekkelijke, zoet geurende appelachtige vrucht heeft herhaaldelijk geleid tot vergiftiging bij Spaanse conquistadores die schipbreuk hadden geleden, en bij hedendaagse toeristen. De manzanillaboom is zo giftig dat de rook van het brandende hout irriterend is voor de ogen. Het latex uit de bladeren en de schors veroorzaakt huidontstekingen. Caraïbische indianen gebruikten het sap om hun pijlen giftig te maken. |
