Note: A species of bird in the Trogon family that lives in the lush vegetation of rainforest zones of Central America. They prefer to carve their nests from decaying trees or stumps. They are vibrantly colored and the males exhibit iridescent tail plumes that can be three feet long during mating season. These plumes were prized by Maya and Aztec cultures, as the resplendant quetzal was closely associated with the deity Quetzalcoatl. This species is the national symbol of Guatemala. |

Dutch ..... Een vogelsoort uit de familie van de trogons die in de weelderige regenwouden van Midden-Amerika leeft. Ze hakken graag nesten uit in rotte boomstammen. Ze zijn fel gekleurd en de mannetjes hebben iriserende staartveren die tijdens de paartijd wel bijna een meter lang kunnen worden. Aan deze veren werd door de Maya's en de Azteken een hoge waarde toegekend, omdat de quetzal nauw verbonden was met de godheid Quetzalcoatl. De soort is het nationale symbool van Guatemala.
