Note: Fruit of Punica granatum, a bush or small tree of Asia. The fruit is the size of a large orange, obscurely six-sided, with a smooth, leathery skin that ranges from brownish yellow to red; within, it is divided into several chambers containing many thin, transparent vesicles of reddish, juicy pulp, each surrounding an angular, elongated seed. The fruit is eaten fresh, and the juice is the source of grenadine syrup, used in flavorings and liqueurs. Throughout the East, the pomegranate has since earliest times occupied a position of importance alongside the grape and the fig. |

Dutch ..... Vrucht van de Punica granatum, een Aziatische struik of kleine boom. Deze vrucht heeft het formaat van een grote sinaasappel, is ongeveer zeszijdig, en heeft een glad, leerachtig vel. Van binnen bestaat de vrucht uit verschillende kamers gevuld met dunne, doorzichtige blaasjes met rode, sappige pulp en een lang en hoekig zaadje. Hij wordt vers gegeten, en het sap dient als de bron van grenadinesiroop, die in smaakmiddelen en likeur gebruikt wordt. In het Oosten neemt de granaatappel al sinds de oudheid een prominente plaats onder de vruchten in, naast de druif en de vijg. |
