The Roman Triumph: The Dangers of Winning a War

Triumphal processions followed Rome's greatest victories and bloodiest massacres. These were lavish occasions where kings, soldiers, gold, silver, bullion, artworks—even trees of the conquered territories—were paraded through the streets of the capital. But the triumph had a darker side, and a victorious general risked humiliation as well as glory. Mary Beard, professor of classics at the University of Cambridge and author of The Roman Triumph, examines these ceremonies and explores questions that remain relevant today about the nature of military success.

Focus Tour: Where the Wild Things Are—Monsters in Ancient Art

Ancient myth is filled with a wide variety of monsters—giants; hybrid creatures such as centaurs, sphinxes, and griffins; and fantastic wild beasts such as the Nemean Lion and the winged horse Pegasus. In this one-hour tour, learn about these creatures and the ways they interacted with human friends and foes. Space is limited. Reflecting Antiquity: Modern Glass Inspired by Ancient Rome

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, archaeological excavations at sites such as Pompeii and Herculaneum resulted in the rediscovery of Roman glass. The designs and production techniques of ancient glass vessels were a revelation to modern artisans, who sought to emulate them in their own work. This exhibition includes some of the original Roman objects that inspired modern glassmakers as well as their reproductions of these ancient pieces. Reflecting Antiquity is organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum and The Corning Museum of Glass.
