WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

It’s Time for a New Getty Intranet

We’d like to invite you to join us as we prepare to replace GO with a new, modern intranet that will better meet Getty’s needs. Help us create a new solution that can facilitate communication, stay up to date, work well on mobile devices, and more! Complete this survey about what’s important to you in an intranet. The information will help us as we move forward.

Seeking Groups for Getty Student Gallery Guides

This summer, the Youth Development team in Education hosts the Student Gallery Guide (SGG) program, a paid internship for teens who enjoy talking about art and are interested in building confidence in their facilitation skills. Teens in the program will create online close-looking art experiences for K-12 groups.

We are looking for groups of 8-35 participants who would be interested in signing up for these experiences. Groups could be school groups, youth programs at other organizations, or camp groups. Please share and follow this link to sign up for a session directly. If you have any questions, please email Brittany Prieto.

Library Database A-Z List: New Look and Functionality

The Library’s Database A-Z list has a new interface. The list, which can be filtered by subject, database type, and provider, includes subscription databases and freely available Getty proprietary databases. A link to the new list is on the Article and Subscription Databases webpage. Questions? Email Reference or call them at (310) 440-7390.

Reminder: Complete the MSA Survey

You have until May 7 to complete our short survey about My Secure Advantage (MSA), a free financial support service offered to all Getty employees. Have you used MSA’s services? We’d like your feedback on your experience. If you haven’t worked with MSA yet, we’d like to know why. It’s easy to connect with a financial coach at MSA. Simply call (888) 724-2326 or visit My Secure Advantage.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, ACCESSIBILITY, AND INCLUSION (DEAI)

Advisory Committee on Land Acknowledgements

Many organizations are currently adopting Land Acknowledgement statements intended to recognize and honor the fact that their operations are located on land once under the stewardship of indigenous peoples. At Getty, increasing numbers of staff have expressed interest in adopting and using such statements for meetings, events, and publications. In response, Getty has formed an Advisory Committee on Land Acknowledgement Statements. The members of the committee are: Shauna Burns-Staudt, Facilities; Lyra Kilston, Museum; Kara Kirk, Publications; Tom McClintock, GCI; Steve Olsen, CFO/COO; Rebecca Peabody, GRI; and Greg Sandoval, Museum.

The committee affirms that as a public-serving institution, we have an ethical obligation to acknowledge and respect the history of indigenous people on the lands where Getty sites now stand. To address this, the committee is meeting regularly and has identified three goals for its work. In the short term, the committee will provide guidance to Getty staff who are interested in developing and using land acknowledgement statements in their meetings and events. Longer term, the committee will advise Getty senior leadership on a path toward engaging and reconciling with indigenous communities in the Los Angeles area and on the adoption of a Getty-wide land acknowledgement statement for use in large public gatherings and public-facing materials. The committee will periodically update the Getty community on its activities, and is working on a resource and FAQ page that will be added to Getty GO. If staff have suggestions or questions, please feel free to contact any of the committee members.

Mary Miller Invited to the American Philosophical Society

Members of the American Philosophical Society, the oldest learned society in the United States, voted to offer membership to Mary Miller, director of the GRI. The APS was founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin for the purpose of “promoting useful knowledge.” Only 5,710 members have been elected since 1743. Congratulations, Mary!

EVENTS

The Poetics of Portraiture

How can photography investigate and liberate the visual language of Black identities? On May 6 at 5 p.m., Glen Wilson moderates a conversation with April Banks, Duane Paul, and Rikkí Wright to discuss their diverse, emancipatory work that includes portraiture. These four Los Angeles-based artists offer individual and collective acts of refusal and reimagination to map freedom in public and private spaces. This is the second of four talks complementing the forthcoming exhibition Photo Flux: Unshuttering LA. Sign up for this free online event.

Day of Service

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Day of Service! We cleaned beaches and neighborhoods, worked with food banks, donated textiles, and made phone calls to gather information about vaccine availability. Many of us helped transcribe documents online for the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Archives. Getty staff shared their personal career paths with over 200 middle and high school students in virtual presentations. The goal of this project was to help students connect what they’re learning in school with the workplace by introducing students to jobs available in their community. Feedback from schools has been overwhelmingly positive and we’ve received requests from schools to repeat it next year. Check out these photos of staff volunteering.

Racial Trauma Sessions

In response to requests from Getty staff, the DEAI Council and Human Resources have partnered to provide workshops on racial trauma. These two-hour sessions will be led by Priscilla Murphy (LPCMH, MS, MEd, BSN, RN), a board-certified counselor with Health Advocate’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). In the first hour of each session Ms. Murphy will make a presentation on racial trauma, and the second hour will allow for a facilitated discussion and Q&A. The workshops will be held virtually on May 17, 18, 24, and 25, 10am-noon, and will be available to all Getty staff. Session links will be provided in the coming week.

May Is Global Employee Health and Fitness Month

Celebrate with us in our virtual classes on Zoom and by using the on-demand resources of Wellbeats. Watch for announcements of additional events and activities throughout the month. For more information on how to participate, please reach out to the Fitness Center.
