DIVERSITY, EQUITY, ACCESSIBILITY, AND INCLUSION (DEAI)

Update from the DEAI Council and Senior Leadership

The DEAI Council met with members of Senior Leadership on April 19 to discuss the next concrete actions the Council will take to advance the Council’s Top 5 DEAI Priorities. With support from senior leadership, the Council is now moving forward with the following:

  • Assess the internal recruitment and hiring process and develop a checklist that builds accountability for DEAI throughout the hiring process.
  • Develop and implement a staff mentorship and sponsorship program that promotes and supports DEAI across the Getty.
  • Create new programs for Getty staff to learn about and understand anti-racism and white supremacy, to include mandatory anti-bias and anti-racism training; a DEAI Anti-Racism Speaker Series; and encouraging organically formed, informal groups for discussion around these topics and common learning goals.

The DEAI Council and Senior Leaders hope to meet again in May to review further DEAI action items proposed by the Council, and look forward to sharing the results of that discussion with the Getty community.

NEWS

Plastics behind the Iron Curtain

The Getty Conservation Institute has partnered with Die Neue Sammlung — The Design Museum in Munich, the Wende Museum of the Cold War in Los Angeles, and the Cologne Institute of Conservation Sciences to launch German Democratic Plastics in Design, a project looking at how Soviet-era plastics were made and valued. Ranging from kitchen appliances and children’s toys to beauty tools and furniture, many of these colorful pieces are design achievements in their own right, and represent the modern aesthetic favored by many countries following World War II. Learn more and see some Soviet-era plastics on the Iris.
