California Missions (Spanish-American history, 1697-1834)

Note: System of Spanish Catholic missions across Baja and Alta California. First mission was built by Father Salvatierra (1648-1717) near Isla Carmen in Baja California in 1697; later missions were built along the California coast, primarily under the direction of missionary Junipero Serra (1713-1784). Built to facilitate colonization of the different Indigenous communities in the area; forced conversions and indentured servitude were common. The mission system was formally abolished in 1834 by the newly formed Mexican government's Law of Secularization.
