The Long Walk (American history, 1863-1866; 1868)

Note: Period of journeys taken by the Navajo (Diné) and Mescalero Apache; from 1863 to 1866, Navajo and Mescalero Apache families were forcibly relocated from their homes in the Four Corners region of the United States (Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado) to Fort Sumner near the New Mexico and Texas border. In 1868, Navajo and Mescalero Apache leaders renegotiated the removal terms to allow them to return to their lands, making the final journey back to the Four Corners region. These journeys are commemorated in the Navajo Nation with remembrance days and a memorial walk.
