Occupation of Alcatraz (American history, 1969-1971)

Note: Protest orchestrated by Native American students and youth, which culminated in seizing the island of Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay, California. The occupation aimed to highlight issues facing Native Americans across the United States, from economic privation to loss of land. Protestors resided on the island from November 1969 to June 1971; the occupation has since been a subject in Native American art. The incident also led to the development of Alcatraz from unused federal land to a national park.
