Record Type: Legendary Place

Aeaea (Greco-Roman legendary island)

Note: Legendary island home of the sorceress deity, Circe. Among the several possibilities of an actual island that could have been intended as Aeaea in the Odyssey and other literature, a favorite is Monte Circeo, a mountain that is now on a peninisula, south of Rome; possibly in very ancient times it was not connected to the mainland, or it appeared to be an island because it was surrounded by marshes.
