Life of Saint Ursula (Christian iconography)

Note: According to her legend, Ursula was the leader of 11,000 virgins reputedly beheaded at Cologne by the Huns, nomadic invaders. She was from Great Britain, and set sail for a Gaulish port. The story is based on a 5th-century inscription from St. Ursula’s Church, Cologne, stating that an ancient basilica had been restored on the site where holy virgins were killed. Over the centuries, the number of maidens increased to several thousand, and the martyrdom was attributed to the Roman emperor Maximian.
