Barnabas, Saint (Christian character)

Note: Barnabas (originally Joseph), styled an apostle in the New Testament, but St. Paul, ranked by the Church with the Twelve, though not one of them. According to tradition, born of Jewish parents on the Island of Cyprus at the beginning of the Christian Era. The legend states that Barnabas was martyred at Salamis, Cyprus, in 61 CE. He is traditionally identified as the founder of the Cypriot Orthodox Church. The feast day of Barnabas is celebrated on June 11. From Acts 14:14 and other references.
