Qurʾān (sacred text, Islam, 632)

Note: Sacred scripture of Islam and, for all Muslims, the very word of God, revealed through the agency of the archangel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad. According to the traditional narrative, several companions of Muhammad who served as scribes wrote down the revelations. The central theophany (divine manifestation) of Islam, is written in Arabic, which is Islam’s sacred and liturgical language. Because of Arabic’s sacred status, the Qurʾān is, strictly speaking, untranslatable, though the text has been rendered into nearly every other language.
