Asteria (Greco-Roman character)

Note: Character in Horace’s Odes (Books III, VII) concerning the "loves of the gods." Asteria is left at home in Greece while her husband Gyges is away in the service of the state; she is being pursued by Enipeus (or alternatively, the god Zeus). The ode refers to Roman law, under which a woman left alone for a year may be considered separated, and thus available.
