Dionysus and Ariadne (Greco-Roman narrative)

Note: Story of Dionysus (Bacchus in Latin) and his love, Ariadne. After assisting and then being abandoned by Theseus, in one version of the story Ariadne was carried to the island of Naxos and left to die. There she was rescued by and married the god Bacchus/Dionysus. Ancient Greek poets and artists liked to portray Ariadne asleep on the shore of Naxos while Dionysus gazes at her with love and admiration. Ariadne’s story was later taken up by European artists, writers, and composers.
