Record Type: Corporate Body
Dossi family (Italian painters, active 15th-16th centuries in Ferrara)

Note: Family of Italian painters, including Dosso Dossi and his younger brother, Battista Dossi, who often worked in collaboration. They were the leading painters at the court of Ferrara under Alfonso I d'Este and Ercole II d'Este, producing large quantities of art that is now lost, including frescoes for the various ducal residences, designs for tapestries, theatre sets, festival decorations, banners, coins, tableware, and the decorations for carriages and barges. A number of paintings on canvas survive, primarily of allegorical or mythological themes that reflect the cultural interests of the Ferrarese court.
