Botanical Art: Demonstrations and Activities

Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California
Botanical illustrators such as Maria Sibylla Merian sailed with 15th- and 16th-century explorers and recorded the plants of newly discovered lands. They captured the beauty of gardens and enhanced scientific understanding of medicinal herbs and plants. Members of the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California seek to understand that legacy by getting to know the work, lives, and techniques of their predecessors in this tradition. Make a leaf rubbing, color an engraving, stamp with paint, fruit and vegetables, and make a freehand drawing of plants and insects.

Hands-on Activities
Guild members lead visitors in participatory activities including leaf rubbings; coloration of engravings; stamping with paint, fruit, and vegetables; and freehand drawing of plants and insects.
10:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
Museum Courtyard

Demonstrations
Observe members of the Botanical Artists Guild as they sketch a variety of plants and flowers in the garden.
