Sur le motif: Painting in Nature around 1800

The Getty Center
This exhibition explores the moment around 1800 when European painters began to stream out of their studios to work outdoors. Inspired by the landscape of Italy, they created dramatic, breathtaking views of light moving on earth, water, and clouds that revolutionized landscape painting and broke ground for the Impressionists who followed.

A Light Touch: Exploring Humor in Drawing

From Michelangelo's doodles to Degas's caricatures, drawings have long been a playground for humor. See how artists as diverse as Leonardo, Watteau, and Goya turned an arch eye on the foibles of their fellow humans, unleashing their playful side in gentle parody, cunning innuendo, and biting satire.

In Focus: The Landscape

The blues times two: New Orleans piano genius Henry Butler electrifies the keyboard on October 3, and punk-rockabilly-funk-blues trio the Devil Makes Three works up some raucous energy on October 24. Free; reservations required. Reservations available beginning Tuesday, September 23, at 9:00 a.m.

Gordon Getty Concert: Italian Cantatas and Opera from the Time of Bernini
Saturday, October 4, 8:00 p.m.
The Getty Center
Celebrated soprano Ann Monoyios and countertenor Drew Minter join the instrumental ensemble ARTEK for a program of exquisite Italian cantatas and opera to complement the exhibition Bernini and the Birth of Baroque Portrait Sculpture. Tickets $20; $15 students/seniors.

More opera is in store on Saturday, October 11, when pianist Nino Sanikidze and artists from the LA Opera present Italian Baroque music. Tours of the Bernini exhibition follow.

Villa Theater Lab: Surf Orpheus

The Getty Villa
Theater Lab is back with a wildly original, poetic reimagining of the myth of Orpheus set in Southern California's surf culture. Blending movement, music, and myth, Surf Orpheus explores the world of contemporary youth and the themes of fate, love and loss. Free; a ticket is required. Body and Armor: The Image of the Heroic Warrior

Ancient Athenian vases were frequently decorated with scenes of great mythical battles. François Lissarrague, Villa Professor for 2008–09, explains why, examining the images of weapons, armor, and the human body on these vessels and exploring how they helped to create a heroic identity for the Greek aristocrats who owned them. Bernini's Beloved: A Portrait of Costanza

Bernini coaxed flesh from stone in his breathtaking marble portrait of his mistress, Costanza Bonarelli. Who was the woman who broke the sculptor's heart? The Image of Peru: History and Art, 1550–1880

This two-day symposium focuses on the visual representation of Peru from the colonial period through the 19th century. Sessions examine two illuminated chronicles of the history of Peru featured in the exhibition The Marvel and Measure of Peru, as well as representations of Peruvian nature, culture, and history. Admission to the Getty Villa is always FREE. A ticket is required. Each Villa ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car. Please note that this does not apply to tickets for events, such as lectures and performances. Check current ticket availability online or call (310) 440-7300. Ticket availability is updated weekly for a two-month period. Same-day tickets may also become available online without advance notice. Groups of 15 or more must make reservations by phone. Parking is $15, but FREE for evening events after 5:00 p.m.
